How did you get started in the beauty industry?

I’ve known I wanted to do hair since I was 8 years old. I have always been fascinated and inspired by everything beauty. Immediately after highschool I attended cosmetology school and worked in a salon type of environment but knew I wasn’t fully satisfied working in a salon. When I started working at Bijou Beautiful I knew I had found my calling when I began working with brides back in 2012.

What excites you the most about working with brides?

The special intimate moments I get to be a part of on a brides wedding day. That rawness is beautiful and my absolute favorite thing about getting to work with brides.

Where do you get your inspiration for the looks you create?

Mostly Pinterest, following amazing wedding hair and make-up artists through Instagram and honestly practicing on friends makes me super inspired to create my own original styles I come up with in my head for bridal looks.

Can you share an experience from a wedding that made you love your job even more?

I always love when my friends get married and they feel so honored to let me glam them up for their special days. There have been so many memorable experiences with different brides. One time I got to go to Palm Springs in this crazy large estate and it was the most relaxed fun bridal party ever. The entire family (I’m talking a good 25 people) had gathered to eat breakfast together to spend time together before the ceremony and I thought that was real cool.

What is your advice for brides?

Make sure you pick a look yourabsolutely comfortable and feel absolutely beautiful in. Don’t listen to what other people think about this because you should look however you want to on your day. Also make sure to eat and drink water before your wedding!

What is your secret weapon product?

Kenra25 volume hairspray. This product literally is my favorite hairspray in the world, nothing compares to it!

What are some of your passions other than bridal styling? What do you love to do for fun?

I really enjoy a good cup of coffee and I’m a total movie buff, horror and dramas are my favorites. I also love to bake!

Meghan is AWESOME!! She fit me in last minute in the busy wedding season and fulfilled my hair dream for my wedding! I told Megan exactly what I wanted and she styled my hair better than I could have imagined. She was prompt, professional, and so nice! I highly highly recommend Megan for any of your hair needs. – Katie Keys

Meghan is absolutely AMAZING! She caters to exactly what you want. She is extremely professional while also being incredibly down to earth and personable. The “getting ready” process on my wedding day was made all the better by Meghan and her makeup artist. They were both so peaceful and patient and they kept everyone calm and happy. Hire Meghan and you will NOT regret it! – Brianna Rodriguez

So happy I chose Meghan to do my makeup (as well as my mom and sisters) for my wedding! She was so organized and wrote out a timeline for our hair and makeup and was flexible to redo the schedule several times according to my planning needs. Everyone was extremely happy with the results and she was a pleasure to work with. Thanks so much Meghan for making my day so special!  - Shelby Alley

Meghan did an amazing job styling my hair as well as my bridesmaids hair for my wedding! She created styles that were soft and flowey and they held all night (even with some wind)! My hair doesn’t hold curl well at all so my hair was one of the things I was the most nervous about on my wedding day. Meghan helped me find something simple like I wanted that really helped compliment my makeup and dress and it was just as curled at the end of the night as in the beginning! She’s awesome!! – Karri Eakin

Meet: Jessica S.

I’m Jess, a freelance Makeup and Hair Stylist based in Southern California. I grew up a Cali girl and I studied at Make-Up Designory in Burbank. After school, I spent six years working with MAC Cosmetics.  I have done makeup and hair styling on numerous professional photo and video shoots, and become skilled in airbrush makeup for both wedding and runway.
Jessica was the makeup artist for my wedding. She did an amazing job and was such a joy to work with. Planning a wedding can be stressful but there was nothing stressful about working with Jessica. She is a professional and amazing at what she does. I loved having Jessica be apart of our big day. Jessica is a sweetheart and will make you look beautiful!

Jessica was so personal and helpful. She really listened to me on what I wanted. She made several suggestions on ideas for hair and make up. I was very happy with the results.

Jess was amazing, she was calming, accommodating, great with everyone from family to friends to calming me down on my day when things didn’t always go well. It was more like hiring a friend and she nailed my hair and makeup. Everyone was thrilled with the job she and her assistant did on the day. I absolutely recommend her for any wedding or event, particularly if you’re not a super traditional bride like me. I was worried about looking too done up and she understood perfectly.

Meet: Deborah L.

How did you get started in the beauty industry?
I actually got started in the beauty industry when I was fourteen years old. I was on set filming a commercial when I met my first stylist, Scott. As I began talking to him, I realized that doing hair and makeup for film could be a great “fallback” career while I went on auditions and became a movie star! Little did I know that hair and makeup would have been my ultimate calling! I began learning from my stylist at his salon and made the easy decision to apply for my beauty license as soon as I graduated from high school. In that time I got plenty of experience honing my skills styling my peers for prom, homecoming, and other events my “clients” needed help getting ready for.

What excites you the most about working with brides?

The most exciting thing to me about working with brides is that every single event is unique, special, and just an incredibly positive experience. I love the energy and I thrive in the bridal environment! I absolutely love what I do because I love making my brides feel like their dreams are coming true; besides, who doesn’t love a wedding? This career has taken me to exotic locations, introduced me to wonderful people, and allowed me the flexibility to maintain my family at home while doing what I love!

Where do you get your inspiration for the looks you create?

I’ll be honest and tell you that I am a Pinterest fanatic, Instagram addict, and Tumblr Queen. I love looking for and getting inspiration from other’s work, from my brides themselves, and even just organic things such as chain link fences and couture fabrics. You’d be surprised where you can pull inspiration from.

Can you share an experience from a wedding that made you love your job even more?
There are so many! I’d have to say my favorite experience from being such a vital part to such an intimate event is seeing the glowing faces and happiness in the room once all of the dresses are zipped and mimosas are empty. I get to be there while mom’s are spending last moments with their “little girls” and when best friends are telling their “sisters’ how proud they are of the woman standing before them in the white dress. I get to be there for all of this and give tips on how not to ruin your makeup by crying so much! (There are tricks!)
I also really enjoy growing with my Brides. I’ve had clients that came to me as high school students getting their first highlights, to cap and gown styling, to pinning on their veil, and then baby shower hair! It’s fulfilling to see people grow and to make them feel beautiful every step of the way. I really feel like I’m part of the family.

What is your advice for the bride?
My ultimate advice would be that something will most definitely NOT GO the way that you expected it to (it won’t be me). Decide on what one thing is the most important to you that day and tell your maid of honor or wedding coordinator that if all else goes wrong, let that one thing not be it! Something will undoubtedly not go as expected and when it does you just have to let it be. At least your hair will look awesome!

What are some of your passions other than Bridal Styling? What do you like to do for fun?
I absolutely love traveling, adventures with my loved ones, and maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle. I’m blessed to live in beautiful California so to me, there’s nothing like coming home after a nice little trip to somewhere new!

How did you get started in the beauty industry?

I started in the beauty industry in the year 2000 at the Rizzien Aveda School for Beauty in Marlton, NJ. From there I started my career at Metropolis Spa and Salon in Princeton, NJ where I received training with Vidal Sassoon instructors and trained stylists. I moved to California 8 years ago which is when I really started getting into wedding and special occasion styling.  From there I attended hair shows, seminars, and classes to advance my education and skill in this area.

What excited you most about working with brides?

being able to be creative and challenge myself are some of the reasons why I love doing wedding hair. I also enjoy being a part of the brides special day and helping her bring her vision to life. It’s such an amazing feeling!

Where do you get your inspiration for the looks you create?

I get inspiration for my looks by talking to the brides and her bridal party to really get a feel for her personality and her likes and dislikes. Also, hair shows and social media are always a good way to keep up with the newest trends. Pinterest and I have a love/hate relationship.

Can you share an experience from a wedding that made you love your job even more?

I did a wedding about five years ago which went very well and everyone loved their hair. This past year I received an email from the brides sister who was in the previous wedding. She was so happy with my work at her sister’s wedding that she wanted me to be a part of her wedding as well. It was such an honor for me to do two weddings for this family and both were a success.

What is your advice for brides?

Have a few looks to play around with on your trial day and remember to relax and enjoy every moment of your special day. Don’t let yourself get stressed, that’s what your Maid of Honor is for. :)

What is your secret weapon product?

Kenra Volume Spray 25. Your hairstyle will stay all night and it smells amazing!

What are some of your passions other than bridal styling? What do you love to do for fun?

i love the beach and I love to paddle board. Also bike riding is one of my favorite ways to exercise. Being active outside is way for fun to me than going to the gym. Also I’m obsessed with my puppy. Taking him to dog beach or the dog park and watching him have fun is always a good time.

Meet: Sarah J.

Meet Sarah Jones! Sarah is an invaluable part of the BIJOU team. Not only is she highly skilled with both hair and makeup (an amazing talent in itself!) she has over six years of experience working with brides. Sarah has a dynamite personality and an ability to deliver red carpet worthy looks to any woman, keeping her busy with brides across Southern California.

How did you get your start in the beauty industry?

I have always had a love for hair & makeup, I love the way it changes a person’s attitude and makes them feel confident, sexy, beautiful, cute depending on the look they want that day. So it was no surprise with I enrolled in beauty school right after high school.

What excites you the most about working with brides?

In the beauty industry I have traveled just about every path but I have chosen to work with brides for the past 6+ years because it is so fulfilling & exciting every week. I love being able to build a connection with my brides at their trial, then to see their vision come together on the wedding day, and knowing their hair & makeup that day will be looked for years to come in photos is truly an honor to be apart of.

Where do you get your inspiration for the looks you create?

I really get my inspiration from my brides. Talking to them at the
consultation I can really start to imagine the complete wedding and them
walking down the aisle, from there I get a sense of their personality & style
that they are comfortable in to make them feel confident & beautiful on a
day centered around the bride.

Can you share an experience from a wedding that made you love your job even more?

I was doing a bride’s look for a charity event hosting a wedding. She had
never had her hair or makeup done, we did not even do a trial, she just
trusted me completely with her look. When I was done and she was able to
look in the mirror, she was so ecstatic she was teary! It just made me
realize how important my job is.

What is your advice for brides?

Hire a great hair & makeup artist! Haha.. But really my advice would be to enjoy everything about your wedding day. Take every moment in and cherish it. Walk slowly down the aisle and listen to each word of the vows as each other says them.

What is your secret weapon product?

Lashes! They make all the difference even if you don’t want a heavy lash, making that lash line a little darker & fuller really makes your eyes stand out in pictures. OH! And blush! The perfect colored blush for a “blushing bride” gives you that fresh, glowing look!

Reviews From Real Brides

“Sarah showed up on the day of our wedding and was so sweet and professional. She truly listened to what each of us wanted and mimicked the pictures the bridesmaids brought perfectly! She got straight to work and was actually pretty quick. My bridesmaids looked absolutely beautiful and they were each so thrilled with the results! I’m so happy I decided to go with Sarah because looking back at my wedding pictures, I’m in love with how we all looked and there will definitely be no regrets in the future.”

“ very professional, personable and patient. very flexible in accommodating my last minute hair additions for the day of my wedding. Sarah was my artist and she arrived 15 minutes before our scheduled time and did a wonderful job doing the hair for mother of the bride and maid of honor. She also did my bridal hair and makeup which I was complemented on all night. She was very receptive to the tweaks I thought of since my trial and exceeded my expectations. I looked and felt beautiful!”

“Well, Sarah was the complete opposite and gave me such a wonderful preview experience. She listened to what I wanted and looked at the Emmy Rossum photo and then photos of my dress and earrings. She explained to me what she was doing with my hair step by step. And she did the style with completely 100% effort, so it looked like I could go straight to my wedding. It felt totally secure, which made me really happy. Sarah also did my makeup. I didn’t have any inspiration photos and told her that I just wanted to look natural and beautiful. I was so happy with what she did and will just have her recreate that look on the big day. She really made my eyes pop. Planning a wedding can be stressful, but I can say with total confidence that I will not be nervous about the way my hair and makeup look at the wedding”

Meet The Owner: Kristen Crawford

After nearly a decade of experience in the beauty industry, it is with great pleasure that Bijou Beautiful introduces our lead stylist and new CEO, Kristen Crawford. Kristen has worked in many areas of the industry including owning her own hair salon, styling photo shoots and fashion shows, stage work and wedding artistry. Her passion for hair and love of styling has inspired her to devote her work to what she refers to as ‘The Love Industry’. You can find her styling bridal, engagement, boudoir and all things related to your Happily Ever After. After working as a stylist on the Bijou artist team for the last few years, it is with the warmest welcome that we introduce Kristen as CEO of Bijou Beautiful. ~

How did you get your start in the beauty industry?
I started my journey in the beauty industry in 2005 when I moved to Los Angeles, CA to study at Paul Mitchell The School. During my time there I had opportunities to attend Hollywood hair shows, assist hairstylists in movie production and work backstage in fashion shows. Living and working in Los Angeles was an incredible experience for me and it gave me the foundation of my ever-growing passion for this industry. I went on to do advanced education at Toni & Guy Academy in Santa Monica and assisted at one of the top TIGI salons in Los Angeles. It was there that I began my journey specializing in wedding styling and has since become one of my greatest loves of the beauty industry.
What excites you the most about working with brides?
I love working with brides for so many reasons. The artistry in wedding hair design is so creative and always fresh and new. I love meeting each individual bride and getting to know her personal style. Each bride has her own story of romance and vision for her wedding day. It is such an honor to be a part of the most special day of her life and my whole-hearted intention as her stylist is to provide support and creative talent to make her vision come true.
Where do you get your inspiration for the looks you create?
I find inspiration everywhere. Some of my favorites are Pinterest, wedding magazines, bridal boutiques and wedding websites. I also have a personal collection of pictures I have kept over the years that I often refer to for inspiration.
Can you share an experience from a wedding that made you love your job even more?
I feel I always take away something special from each wedding. It truly is an honor to be a part of each woman’s journey to her wedding day. The most memorable would have to be styling my best friends wedding. In 2012, my best friend married her high school sweetheart and along with being the maid of honor, I was given the opportunity to style her hair as well as the bridal party. It meant so much to be a part of her most special day and that memory will stay with me forever.
What is your advice for brides?
After all the weddings I have styled over the years, my best advice would be ENJOY EVERY MOMENT! The planning can get hectic and stressful but it really does go by so fast. Try to enjoy the process and soak up every bit of bridal bliss. The journey from engagement to wedding is such a beautiful one. Enjoy each and every day and remember all those around you are there to love and support you in this journey to your wedding day.
What is your secret weapon product?
I don’t go anywhere without my Michael O’Rourke 3 Way Hairspray. It is the BEST! But my secret weapon would have to be Big Sexy Hair Powder Play. I use it on so many different styles and it is by far the top pick from all my brides.
What are some of your passions other than hair? What do you like do for fun?
I have been a yoga instructor for over 10 years and I also teach Pilates. Yoga has always been a passion of mine, I love my classes and private clients.
I also love to find new healthy recipes and fun workouts which you can find posted on my When I’m not working or teaching you can usually find me out with my dog or spending some quality time with my man. I live in the beautiful city of San Diego so there is always something to do outside and of course a day at the beach is always paradise.
Reviews From Real Brides
Kristen has been doing my hair for a very long time and she has always done an absolutely beautiful job, so she was the obvious choice for a hairstylist for my wedding day. She did my hair, the hair of my bridesmaids and my mom’s hair. We met several times prior to the wedding day to plan a style and she cut my hair so that it would be in the best shape and style for the wedding day hair style. On the wedding day, she worked quickly and efficiently to ensure that everyone was done on time-but she did not sacrifice style for time management!! Every single person looked absolutely beautiful, and my hair looked better than it ever has before-something every bride wants to be able to say on their wedding day. Everyone was done on time and looked perfect. There is not enough good things I can say about the work Kristen does and she is so fun and personable and professional to top off her talent. I would recommend her to absolutely anyone!!
-Amy, Las Vegas, NV
“I cannot say enough wonderful things about Kristen Crawford of Blyss Salon! I have been going to Kristen for all of my cuts and styles for the last two years and when I got engaged, I immediately asked her to do my hair and my bridesmaids’ hair for my wedding because she is so talented and I always feel beautiful when I leave her salon. Kristen was amazing because we talked about different hairstyles for months before the wedding (including me sending her pictures of potential styles) and she planned my haircuts strategically (in terms of how short to cut my hair each time and when to have my final trim before the wedding) so the style would look its best. Kristen was super receptive to feedback both during my hair trial and on the big day, checking in with me at every step to make sure that I was completely happy. Kristen also did the hair for my 4 bridesmaids and my mom. All of them asked for very different styles and Kristen executed each look flawlessly. Everyone was so happy with their hair. My mom, who has color treated hair and struggles to get her hair to look shiny, looked amazing! Kristen also arrived early and worked efficiently, so there was absolutely no stress about timing. In fact, all of us were actually done way ahead of schedule, which was wonderful! I would absolutely recommend Kristen, not only because she is so talented, but because she is also a pleasure to work with.”
-Dana, San Diego, CA
